Health insurance premiums increase

When people face the cost increase in insurance premium, they understand that it is more difficult to afford health insurance coverage. The insurance premiums have risen recently, in comparison with last year. Some states have legislation that protects residents from insurance premium increases. However, because of financial hardships, people tend to refuse getting a health insurance.

Insurance companies say that the premium increases are needed in order for them to keep functioning efficiently. Anyway, more and more consumers face a point when the premiums become so expensive that they simply cannot afford obtaining a protective health insurance. This leads to the situation where the number of uninsured people increases rapidly. Some Americans have to quit health insurance programs to protect themselves from having financial problems. The premium increases is a huge problem, which should concern everyone, because it forces people to seek assistance in the governmental insurance programs. Some companies introduced programs that restrict health insurance premium increases. In order to sign up for a program as such, insurance holders had to utilize Health Savings Accounts (HSA).

Experts say that health insurance premiums for the year 2007 are at the point of 11%, which is slightly less than in 2006, when they were on the point of 11, 5%. Although, the fact that every year premiums increase in their cost, and people are concerned about saving money and cutting on their everyday expenses to be able to pay for the health insurance coverage.

Premium increases worry not only the consumers, but also health insurance companies. Sometimes they have to announce terrifying news, notifying that there will be a huge increase in premiums, and it is based on previous year’s claims.

As we have mentioned above, some states have adopted several laws, which prohibit insurance companies from increasing premiums without the permission of the state government. However, these laws vary from state to state and have different specifications. All of them have the same intention – to keep residents from falling into a situation when they cannot afford to buy insurance at all. Some States try to keep track of all price rises in order to stop the increases that are considered unnecessary. California State, for example, allows consumers to protest the planned health insurance premium increases before the implementation. It’s a pity, but not all the states have specific legislation that can protect insurance holders from unfair price changes in premium rates. If such situation has touched your family, contact your local government representatives with your concerns.

Besides, don’t forget to consider governmental programs that can provide some kind of coverage in case you cannot afford to pay for the complete medical coverage.
